Websites for the Spanish market: a guide for Nordic companies
More and more Nordic companies are establishing themselves in Spain — especially along the Costa del Sol, where Marbella has become a hub for Scandinavian entrepreneurs, real estate firms and service businesses. But the most common mistake happens before the first customer contact: pointing to the existing Swedish website and hoping it will be enough. It rarely is. A website built for the Swedish market signals — in content, structure and technical setup — that the company is not locally present. To Spanish customers, and to Google, that is a clear marker.
The difference between translation and localization is where most projects fail. Translating texts word for word produces grammatically correct pages that still feel foreign. Localization means adapting messaging, tone, examples and references to how Spanish customers actually search, read and make decisions. Spanish buyers, for instance, expect more personal context and clearer contact paths than a typical minimalist Swedish site provides. That does not mean abandoning your visual identity — but the content must be built for the audience, not mirrored from the home market.
The technical foundation determines whether Google shows your Spanish version to Spanish searchers at all. Three decisions are critical. First: hreflang tags that correctly map which language version belongs to which market, including x-default for international visitors. Second: domain strategy. A subdirectory (/es/) on your existing domain consolidates link equity and is simplest to operate, while a .es domain sends the strongest local signal but requires building authority from zero. Finally: performance. A site hosted only in northern Europe loads noticeably slower in Andalusia — a global CDN is a requirement, not a luxury.
Local SEO in Spain differs more from Sweden than many expect. Google Business Profile is essential for local searches, and companies without a verified Spanish address are invisible in map results. Search behavior differs too: Spanish queries are often longer and more conversational, and competition for commercial terms is lower than in Sweden — an opportunity for early movers. Spanish-language content that genuinely answers local questions ranks faster than translated generic pages. Note also that Spanish users in certain industries, especially real estate and tourism, frequently search in English — a well-planned multilingual strategy may therefore need three languages, not two.
Trust is built differently in different markets. Spanish customers place great weight on personal contact: answered phone numbers, WhatsApp buttons, a physical address and faces of the team. Payment habits differ as well — Bizum is widely used in Spain, and many consumers expect it alongside cards. On the legal side, GDPR (RGPD) applies in full, but Spain also has its own data protection authority (AEPD), among the most active in Europe — cookie handling and privacy texts must meet the standard in Spanish. Reviews on Spanish platforms outweigh Swedish testimonials, no matter how many you have at home.
The most common mistakes we see when Nordic companies expand south: machine-translated content without editorial quality, hreflang that points wrong or is missing entirely, Swedish office hours as the only contact path, and launching without local keyword research. Another classic error is leaving the Spanish version understaffed — three translated pages versus fifty Swedish ones — which signals half-hearted commitment to both Google and customers.
Checklist before you launch: conduct keyword research in Spanish (not translated Swedish terms), choose a domain strategy and implement hreflang correctly, set up Google Business Profile with a local address, adapt at least your most important landing pages editorially, ensure local contact paths and payment options, and measure performance from Spanish nodes.
